Oral Health Coalition

The North Dakota Oral Health Coalition’s mission is to foster collaborative solutions to achieve oral health equity. 

North Dakota Oral Health Coalition’s purpose is to coordinate partners and organizations throughout the state of North Dakota to create a collective impact by targeting oral health disparities. This proposed work focuses long-term on increasing access to oral health, improving North Dakotans’ oral health literacy, and developing integration between all professions impacted by oral health.

Increase awareness among providers about oral health inequities in North Dakota through increased engagement by non-dental spaces to provide information about oral health to the Medicaid population. 

Action Steps 

  • Identify non-dental spaces. 
  • Develop oral health messaging for the non-dental spaces. 
  • Find opportunities to enhance oral health activities and implement messaging. 
  • Ensuring non-dental space personnel have the necessary resources/tools. 

Increase availability, access, and uptake of oral health services for Medicaid recipients in North Dakota by increasing provider knowledge about medical-dental integration opportunities. 

Action Steps 

  • Conduct a landscape assessment related to access to oral health services. 
  • Provide education to medical professionals about opportunities for providing preventive oral health services. 
  • Integrate dental services within primary care appointments, such as well-child visits. 
  • Encourage appropriate referrals and promote work at the highest scope of practice, including nurses, CNAs, RDNs, and public health hygienists. 
  • Implement a case-manager program to increase enrollment in Medicaid insurance and provide dedicated support. 

Increase Medicaid population dental visits in North Dakota. 

  • Work with North Dakota Dental Association board members to identify barriers and challenges to increase acceptance of Medicaid patients. 
  • Increase provider awareness about the unmet oral health needs of Medicaid recipients. 
  • Create educational materials on new Medicaid patients for billing staff. 

Increased partnerships to improve uptake of oral health services for Medicaid recipients in North Dakota. 

  • Formalize structure and operation for the revitalization of the ND Oral Health Coalition. 
  • Identify previous and new partners for the coalition to achieve the mission. 
  • Identify two or three key initiatives as priorities, along with a timeline for the coalition. 
  • Identify workgroups and SMART goals to address the priorities of the OH Coalition.
