Falling Through the Cracks: Helping the Working Uninsured Find Coverage

Navigator Alex says, “While I was at Bishop Dudley, a worker approached me after I finished with a Medicaid shelter client. She asked if I could help her too—not in her role as staff, but as someone struggling to get affordable insurance for herself. She makes too much to qualify for Medicaid, but the insurance offered through her employer is too expensive. So, she’s been going without coverage. We scheduled an appointment for the following day to explore Marketplace options.

This story shows how people with stable employment are falling through the cracks. Marketplace coverage exists to serve this exact population—people who are working, but can’t afford traditional insurance. We talk so often about the ‘uninsured,’ but many of them aren’t unemployed or uninformed—they’re stuck in a system that doesn’t offer real options. That’s why Marketplace access is so critical.”
